Does Chiropractic Work?
Let’s begin this one with a couple of truths.
-Chiropractic has been around since 1895. That will be 124 years this year.
-Doctors of Chiropractic complete around 7.5 years of undergraduate and doctorate level schooling including rigorous courses in Anatomy and Physiology, Gross Anatomy, Biochemistry, Immunology, Endocrinology, Diagnosis, and Neurology (just to name a few)
-Chiropractic over the years has been subject to ridicule, false claims and organized attacks. Chiropractors have been jailed and persecuted for working to help people and refusing to back down. Chiropractors fought back legally in an antitrust suit…..AND WON.
-Chiropractic is VERY well founded in research across many platforms, including published research in journals such as The Journal of the American Medical Association (the same association that made an organized attempt to destroy Chiropractic in the 80’s)
The short answer: yes. Chiropractic works.
The slightly longer answer: Chiropractic works because the purpose of chiropractic is to restore proper function to the body so that it heals better, faster, and stays that way. So how exactly does it work?
How Exactly Does Chiropractic Work?
Chiropractic works by removing interference between the brain and the rest of the body. See every instant of your existence is filled with cells throughout the body sending messages to the brain, the brain interpreting these messages, and sending a return message on what to do next. This line of communication is constant. The trouble begins when the brain has trouble properly decoding and returning messages due to interference present in the lines of communication. Now we’re talking about TRILLIONS of signals coming and going. If there is interference present, then the body won’t be working at full capacity. It will become bogged down, and THAT is when you start experiencing Issues.
The Chiropractor has been HIGHLY trained in diagnosis and removal of this interference. Once proper function is restored to the body, healing occurs. It is for this reason that you hear Chiropractors say IT TAKES TIME. It is because we are adding nothing to the body, and we take nothing away from the body. We Allow the doctor within to work at its highest potential, and THAT is what makes all the difference.
As an Upper Cervical Chiropractor, My area of focus is the top two bones in the neck. I focus on this area in particular because it has the greatest chance of generating the most systemic change. It is interesting to me because all day we hear about the importance of mobility. Countless news outlets, social media movement gurus, television doctors and self proclaimed “experts” love to discuss the importance of becoming and remaining mobile, but they fail to discuss THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT AREA TO MOBILIZE IN THE ENTIRE BODY.
See, the joints in the top two bones of the neck are special. They are different from all other joints in that they are the only joints that allow movement between the skull and the rest of the spine. They are a freely moving joint, and they are a pivot joint. Simply put, this means that there is a TON of movement that is SUPPOSED to be going on at this joint and when that movement is hindered, you experience a lot more than a stiff neck. It can lead to problems ALL OVER THE BODY.
Now when those top two bones, which are so important they have their own separate names from the rest of the bones of the spine (Atlas for the top bone and axis for the second) stop moving as they should, it isn’t a simple fix. Stretching isn’t going to fix this issue. You need someone HIGHLY trained in this area to restore proper biomechanics. Someone that has had extensive training both in and outside of school. Someone you can trust to determine which direction those bones need to be moved because those two bones can have many, many, many, many, many combined degrees of malposition.
This is why The Specific is different
At The Specific Chiropractic Centers, we do very thorough testing utilizing a tech known as Computerized Infrared Imaging to first determine if interference is present, then we take a very specific set of x-rays to determine which direction those top two bones need to be moved. Our doctors have over 200 extra hours of training in a technique specifically directed at the top two bones and their relation to the skull. On top of that, Doctor’s at The Specific Centers nationwide attend outreach programs to provide care all over the world. We are able to have more experience with more people than any other provider. We pride ourselves as the top experts in ensuring proper movement of the upper cervical spine.
Yours in health,
Dr. Casey Sanders
